There's No Place Like Home for Sexuality Education

March 2, 2018 from 6-9 PM at Drew Steele Center in Greenville, NC

This workshop is designed to help parents (and/or professionals) become more comfortable and confident addressing sexuality issues that commonly surface among individuals with intellectual disabilities. Typical sexual learning patterns will be discussed and teaching strategies (how do I teach?) will be shared. Resources and ideas for teaching at home, school, or in the community will be shared. There will be a 2 hour presentation and time for questions.

Information about the presenter:

Terri Couwenhoven MS is an AASECT certified sex educator who specializes in designing and implementing sexuality programs and materials for people with intellectual disabilities, families and professionals. She is the author of 4 books and speaks nationally. She recently appeared on A & E's Born This Way. To learn more about Terri visit

Description of the Parent and Child Puberty Workshops:

These sessions are specifically designed for pre-adolescents (usually ages 10-15) with intellectual disabilities who are entering or in the midst of puberty. During this 2 hr program, participants will learn about physical and emotional changes that accompany puberty and ways to manage these changes. Parents and pre-adolescents learn together in comfortable, safe, and fun environment. Concrete, interactive methods are used to improve comprehension. Workshop is presented in gender specific groups.
